I have a bass clef question!?

I'm looking at a piece of sheet music, and I have a few questions about the key signature. There is one flat, so I obviously play a B flat. HOWEVER! Does that mean I play sharps also? And on my piece there is sharp sign in parenthesis before a note, does that mean I play it sharp until I see another sign ( ie. natural, flat)?
